What to Do After a Burst Pipe
Shut off the water
If you can safely access the local valve or the main water line, stop the source first. If you do not know where the shutoff is, do not waste time guessing while the loss continues.
Protect electrical safety
Water and electricity do not mix. Be especially careful around wet outlets, light fixtures below the leak, and appliances in the wet zone.
Map the spread
A burst pipe often affects more than one room. Check below the source room, inside nearby closets, along baseboards, and at adjacent doorways.
Photograph first, then move valuables
Get quick documentation before major cleanup starts. Then move small items and electronics if it is safe.
Expect a drying phase
Even after the water source is off and the standing water is gone, wet drywall, flooring, insulation, and cabinetry may still need controlled drying.
